CT Scan - Lung Scan
A Screening Procedure for At-Risk Patients
Dramatic findings at Cornell University indicate that low-dose CT scan identify
lung tumors well before they appear on traditional chest x-rays. The five-year survival
rate for lung cancer stands at 14 percent, but with early detection and treatment,
the survival rate may increase to as much as 80 percent. Cardiovascular Medical
Group of Southern California is pleased to offer the Multi-Detector CT Lung Cancer
Screening Scan as an early detection procedure for patients at risk for developing
this dreaded disease. This scan may be most useful for identifying tumors and other
lung abnormalities in patients with the following risk factors:
- Heavy Smokers (cigarettes, cigars or pipes)
- Significant exposure to second-hand smoke
- Repetitive exposure to cancer-causing, such as asbestos and radon
- History of tuberculosis or pneumonia or plane chest X-ray abnormality
- Significant family history of lung cancer
- Screening for metastasis
A Safe, Simple Procedure with Lifesaving Potential
The Multi-Detector CT Lung Cancer Screening Scan provides highly detailed images
of the lungs. It requires no injections or disrobing. The procedure is safe, simple
and pain-free, enabling patients to resume normal activities immediately afterward.
There are no adverse effects. Actual scanning time is less than one minute. For
those with significant risk factors or abnormalities, repetitive CT screening for
lung cancer over time may prove to be a helpful. Keep in mind that not all patients
will benefit from lung CT screening and the American College of Radiology does not
recommend this test in the absence of clinical suspicion for significant disease.
However, patients who are over 50 and who are or were smokers with the equivalent
of a 10 "pack-year" history are most at risk for developing lung cancer. (To calculate
pack-year history, multiply the number of years of smoking by the number of packs
per day. For example, two packs per day for five years equals a 10 pack-year history.)
All CT scans of the lung are interpreted by Cedars Sinai Imaging Medical Group,
a world renowned radiology group affiliated with Cedars Sinai Medical Center, one
of the nation's leading medical centers. Their specialists in lung radiology provide the highest
quality of interpretation. In all cases, a full report will be sent to the patient's
physician and, on request, directly to the patient.
Depending on the findings, physicians and patients may receive recommendations on appropriate
follow-up scans or the need for referrals (sometimes with additional testing under
auspices of a lung specialist referred by your primary physician). Please keep in
mind an initial finding on the CT scan, for example a nodule, does not necessarily
mean a diagnosis of lung cancer.
