Horizons
(Protocol HORIZONS AMI Trial - Harmonizing Outcomes with RevascularIZatiON and Stents in Acute Myocardial Infarction)
The Horizons AMI Trial is a multi-center trial that will be enrolling up to 3400 randomized patients at about 200 centers. The trial is sponsored by Cardiovascular Research Foundation. One purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the use of Angiomax (a medication to prevent the formation of blood clots) prior to and during the stenting procedure in heart attack patients. Angiomax is currently approved by the FDA for use in patients in the US, but for a different indication.
A second purpose of this study is to determine whether the TAXUS™ stent (a specific drug-coated stent which delivers the drug Paclitaxel to the blood vessel wall) can safely reduce the possibility of your heart artery closing up (restenosis) and reduce the need for a second angioplasty. This is compared to the Express2™ stent (the same type of stent, but without the drug coating) after use in patients with a heart attack. These stents are presently approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the US for use in patients with chest pain without heart attack.
Patient participation in the study is anticipated to be approximately 50 months, just over 4 years.
